Ayung River rafting timings: the best month and hour
The Ayung runs every day of the year, but not the same river every day. Start times, the monsoon months and the light in the gorge all shape which morning or afternoon suits you.

Start times on the Ayung
Ayung River rafting timings are flexible compared with most tours. The trip this site books lets you choose a starting time between 9 AM and 1 PM, and confirms your pickup time after booking. Sobek, another Ayung operator, starts trips every hour from 09.00 to 13.00, split into morning and afternoon departures.5
That start time is the moment you are at the base, not the moment you leave your hotel. With pickup from the south of the island, Indonesia Travel puts the drive at about one hour from most tourist centres.6 An early start from Seminyak or Canggu means an early breakfast; from Ubud, about 20 minutes away, it is a relaxed morning.6
After the start, the listing gives 2 hours on the river and a 30-minute lunch. Add the briefing, the walk down and the climb back up, and a 9 AM start has you eating around midday, while a 1 PM start runs into the late afternoon. Pick the slot that fits the rest of your day, then the season.
Morning or white water rafting in Ubud in the afternoon?
Mornings have two things going for them. Indonesia Travel advises a morning ride for better light in the gorge, which matters if you want photos.4 In the rainy season, one Telaga Waja operator notes that heavy rain usually starts by noon and does not recommend rafting after 12 PM. The same pattern is worth keeping in mind on the Ayung in the wet months.
White water rafting in Ubud in the afternoon has its own case. A later start leaves the morning free for a temple, a market or simply a late breakfast, and the trip this site books accepts starts up to 1 PM. Sobek runs afternoon trips at 12.00 and 13.00 as well.5
Whichever you pick, the sun is high for most of the trip. The valley sits about 8 degrees south of the equator, where the day length barely changes through the year: calculated day length is about 11.6 hours in June and about 12.6 in December.78 Sun cream matters at any hour on the river.

The Ayung is classed II and III in the dry season.2
When the water rises the Ayung is classed IV.3
Indonesia Travel advises the morning for better light.4
This site's trip accepts starts up to 1 PM.
The estimates make it the wettest month in the valley.8
In the rainy season, however, when the water-level rises, the Ayung is classified as class IV, having medium large waves and needing better skills to maneuver the sharp bends when needed.
The dry months and the wet months
Bali's seasons are set by the monsoon. Wikipedia describes the west monsoon from about October to April, bringing heavy rain particularly from December to March.1 Outside those months, rain becomes much less frequent and the river runs lower.
The NASA POWER estimates for the Ayung valley show the swing clearly. January brings about 310 mm of rain on about 27 days with 1 mm or more.8 August brings about 22 mm on about 5 days.8 These are model and satellite estimates for the valley rather than gauge readings, and they count light showers generously, but the shape of the year is plain.
Temperature hardly changes. The same estimates give average daytime highs between 26.5 °C in July and 29.7 °C in November, and nights between about 21.3 °C in August and 23.9 °C in the wettest months.8 The air stays warm all year, so the season decides the river, not your comfort.

How rain changes the river
The grade of a river usually changes with its flow.9 On the Ayung, Indonesia Travel gives class II and III in the dry season and class IV in the rainy season, when the water level rises and the waves grow.23 The trip this site books describes the same thing: class 2 rapids that sometimes rise to class 4 in the rainy season.
High water usually makes rapids harder, though some become easier when their rocks are covered.10 At flood stage, even usually easy rapids can hide lethal and unpredictable hazards.11 That is the reason operators change plans after heavy rain: one listing warns that heavy rain may affect river conditions and the itinerary.
So the best month depends on what you want. First-timers and families will find the drier months, with the Ayung at II and III, the gentler choice.2 Rafters who want bigger water may prefer the wetter season, accepting that the trip can be moved or changed when the river is too high.
Month by month on the Ayung
From May to September the valley estimates stay at or below about 74 mm of rain a month, with July at about 34 mm on about 7 rainy days.8 This is the low-water period, and the time to book if you want the gentlest version of the river.
October and November are the turn of the season, with about 71 mm and 140 mm of rain in the estimates.8 They are also the hottest months by day, with highs around 29.6 °C and 29.7 °C.8 Expect the river to rise as the weeks go on.
December to March are the heart of the wet season.1 The estimates give about 252 mm in December, 310 mm in January and 250 mm in February.8 April eases to about 131 mm.8 In those months, book a morning, keep a spare day and read the operator's weather policy before you pay.
Busy days, quiet days and the light in the gorge
Time of day changes more than the light. Rafts launch from several bases along the same stretch, and both the trip this site books and Sobek start trips across the late morning and early afternoon.5 The calm pools and waterfall stops can feel lively when several groups arrive together, so a first or last slot of the day often feels quieter, without any guarantee.
For photographs, the gorge is deep and the sun reaches the water only part of the day. Indonesia Travel's advice to raft in the morning for better light is worth following if pictures matter to you.4 Some guides pull over for photos when the water allows, and that is easier on a calm, bright stretch than in flat afternoon cloud.12
Season changes the colour of everything. In the drier months the water runs clearer over visible rocks; after heavy rain it turns brown and fast, and the river climbs towards the class IV that Indonesia Travel gives for the rainy season.3 Neither is better in itself. Decide whether you want the scenery or the splash, and book the season that gives you more of it.
Planning around rain and holidays
Rain need not cancel your plans. One Ayung listing offers an alternative day when the weather is bad, and another says it runs in all weather conditions. Both approaches are legitimate; the useful thing is to know which one your listing follows.
Free cancellation helps in the wet months. The listings compared on this site allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If the forecast looks heavy the evening before, you can cancel and pick another date instead of paddling in a storm.
Build the rafting into the middle of your stay rather than the last day. A spare morning gives you room if the river is high or a pickup runs late, and lets you choose a clear day. In the drier months the same habit costs nothing, and it keeps the river from becoming the one thing your flight depends on.

You ask,we answer.
What time does Ayung River rafting start?
Between 9 AM and 1 PM. The trip this site books lets you choose a start in that window; pickup time is confirmed after booking.
Which months are best for rafting near Ubud?
The drier months, roughly May to September. They fall outside the west monsoon, which lasts from about October to April.1
Can you raft the Ayung in the rainy season?
Yes, but the river is higher. Indonesia Travel classes it IV in the rainy season, against II and III in the dry season.32
Is morning or afternoon rafting better?
Mornings, for light and weather. A morning ride gives better light, and one east Bali operator says wet-season rain usually starts by noon.4
Which is the wettest month in the Ayung valley?
January, in the estimates. NASA POWER estimates about 310 mm of rain in January on about 27 rainy days.8
Does it get cold on the Ayung?
The valley stays warm all year. Estimated daytime highs run from 26.5 °C in July to 29.7 °C in November.8
What happens if it rains on my rafting day?
That depends on the operator. One listing offers an alternative day in bad weather; another runs in all weather.
