Telaga Waja vs Ayung River rafting: which Bali river?
The Ayung is the river near Ubud; the Telaga Waja runs through Karangasem in the east. They differ in grade, distance from the beaches, stairs and timing, and the right choice depends on your group.

Two rivers, two sides of the island
Bali has three main rafting rivers by Indonesia Travel's count, and this page weighs up the Ayung against the Telaga Waja.6 The Ayung, Bali's longest river, flows past Kedewatan on the edge of Ubud.78 The Telaga Waja lies mainly in Rendang district of Karangasem Regency, in east Bali, and is the island's second-longest river.9
The Telaga Waja rises on the slope of Mount Abang and passes Rendang on its way to the sea in Klungkung Regency.10 Its water comes from springs near Mount Agung, among them the Lipang, Arca and Telaga Waja springs, which Balinese Hindus hold holy.11 The same high flow is tapped by the local government for drinking water.12
Telaga Waja vs Ayung River rafting is therefore not a choice between two operators but between two landscapes. The Ayung runs through a deep gorge of rainforest, rice fields and carved walls close to Ubud.13 The Telaga Waja runs through the rice fields, forest and rock gorges of the east, closer to Sidemen and the slopes of Agung, by one operator's description.14

Which river is wilder?
Sobek, which runs both rivers, puts them in a clear order. It calls the Ayung the more relaxed, scenic river with gentle rapids, ideal for families and beginners.15 It describes the Telaga Waja as having stronger currents and more continuous class II to III rapids, with longer runs.16 On its trip page it goes further and grades its Telaga Waja run class III+.14
Listings on the Telaga Waja do not agree with each other. One gives class I and II rapids on a 2-hour run. Another gives class II and III over a 14 kilometre course. A third gives level II to IV on a river run of about 18 km, including a 5-meter drop over a dam. A small-group listing speaks of moderate to strong rapids and a basic level of fitness.
On the Ayung, Indonesia Travel gives class II and III in the dry season and class IV in the rainy season.12 The fair summary is that both rivers can be run by beginners on the right day, and that the Telaga Waja trips tend to be described in stronger terms. If you want the dam drop, the Telaga Waja listing that names it is the one to read.

Ayung or Telaga Waja for you?
Pick the line that matches your trip
Indonesia Travel puts it about 20 minutes from Ubud.3
One listing collects from the Sidemen area at 9:00 AM.
One operator describes stronger currents and more continuous rapids there.16
One operator calls it ideal for families and beginners.15
It promises access to and from the river without many stairs.
Ayung River is located in Ubud, Bali’s cultural heart, and offers a more relaxed and scenic rafting experience with gentle rapids, lush forests, waterfalls, and riverside carvings, making it ideal for families and beginners.
The drive is the biggest difference
For most travelers based in the south, distance decides the question. Indonesia Travel puts the Ayung about one hour's drive from most tourist centres and 20 minutes from Ubud.3 Telaga Waja listings give longer figures: about 1.5 hours from Seminyak, Kuta or Jimbaran on one, about 3 hours on another.
One Telaga Waja listing shows a 1-hour car ride each way around 2.5 hours of rafting and lunch, starting at Muncan in Rendang and finishing at Sidemen. A small-group listing collects guests at 7:00 AM from central Bali and at 9:00 AM from the Sidemen area. If you are staying in Sidemen or east Bali, the Telaga Waja is the nearby river and the Ayung the long drive.
From Ubud the Ayung is the obvious choice for a half-day. From Seminyak or Canggu, both mean a morning in the car; the Telaga Waja simply adds more of it. Pair the eastern river with a stay in Sidemen, or with a day that continues through east Bali, and the drive stops feeling like a cost.

Stairs, access and the shape of the day
The Ayung's gorge is steep, and its bases sit high above the water. The trip this site books warns of a large number of steps down to the river and back up. A listing from the same base counts 300 steps down and 400 up.
On the Telaga Waja, one listing makes the opposite point: easy access to and from the river, without many stairs. The small-group listing still mentions some steps to the river and the exit. If knees or a fear of long staircases are your main concern, the stair count may matter more than the grade.
Raft sizes differ by listing as well. One Telaga Waja trip uses rafts of up to 6 people that may be shared with another party; another puts up to 4 in a raft. On the Ayung, Ayung Dewata's listing gives at most 5 to 6 per boat. A smaller raft means each paddler counts for more in the rapids.
Timing and the rainy season
The Telaga Waja is mostly a morning river. Sobek runs its Telaga Waja trips in the morning only, with starts from 09.00 to 11.00.4 The small-group listing rafts only at 10:00 AM and, in the rainy season, does not recommend the Telaga Waja after 12 PM, because heavy rain usually starts by noon.
The Ayung offers more flexibility. Sobek starts Ayung trips every hour from 09.00 to 13.00.5 The trip this site books lets you choose a start between 9 AM and 1 PM. An afternoon start on the Ayung suits a late breakfast or a morning elsewhere in Ubud.
Rain shapes both rivers. Around the Telaga Waja, Wikipedia gives annual rainfall of 2123 mm, with January the wettest month at 569 mm and September the driest at 23 mm.20 The Ayung rises in the rainy season to class IV.2 In the wet months, book early starts on either river and keep a spare day.
What a morning on each river feels like
On the Ayung, the morning starts high above the river. You change at a base on the rim of the gorge, walk down a long staircase into the forest, and launch between steep walls where the carved rock panels and waterfalls appear one after another.13 Some guides stop at the calm pools for photos when the water allows.21
The Telaga Waja feels more open. Sobek describes its run through open landscapes, rice fields, rainforest and rock gorges, with rapids that come in a more continuous rhythm.1416 On the listing that names it, the dam drop is the stand-out moment, a 5-meter drop over a dam.
Either way, the river is shared with other rafts on busy mornings, and both bases end with lunch. If you have already rafted the Ayung on an earlier trip to Bali, the Telaga Waja is the natural way to see something new; if it is your first time on white water, the Ayung's closeness to Ubud and its gentler reputation make it the easier introduction.15
Prices on the two rivers
Prices overlap. The Telaga Waja listing this page recommends starts from $20, with lunch and pickup available. The small-group trip starts from $24, the Telaga Waja expedition from $25, and a day with private-car pickup from $40.
On the Ayung, the trip this site books starts from $26, and the lowest-priced rafting run in our comparison from $18. Money is not what separates the rivers; time in the car and the character of the water are.
Reviews do not settle it either. The Telaga Waja expedition averages 4.91 from 102 reviews, the recommended listing 4.74 from 159. The trip this site books averages 4.74 from 2,435 reviews. Either river can give a very good morning; choose by where you sleep and how much water you want.
